pays a short visit to Moscow. There is a special occasion for it,
namely the ceremony of presenting the prestigious A. I. Rykov Award in
economics for scientific achievements for foreign scholars. The Prize
has been awarded to the TIGER Director by the
Russian State Economic and Trade University (RGTEU).

TIGER invites for our monthly seminar. This time we host Professor
Cezary Wojcik from Warsaw School of Economics, associate professor at
the Polish Academy of Science, and Director of Bureau for Integration
with the Euro Area at the National Bank of Poland (2007-2008).
Professor Wojcik speaks on "How to Build a Good Society: Some Remarks
for Poland". Polish and foreign students as well as the faculty are
warmly invited.

The TIGER Director, Professor Grzegorz W. Kolodko has
been nominated as the member of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and
Humanities (Academie Europeenne des Sciences des arts et des
Lettres). This eminent organization, affiliated with UNESCO, involves about 600
distinguished scholars and artists, including 60 Nobel Laureates, from
54 countries.

our next seminar we will be discussing how contemporary financial
crisis affects international currency system. Introductory paper
titled: "Crisis and changes in the international currency system -
implications for euro zone and for Poland", will be presented by dr
Grzegorz Tchorek from Warsaw University and National
Bank of Poland.

Dr Jacek Tomkiewicz takes part in the seminar organized by The
Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies.
The seminar is organized within the research project "World and Europe
in 2025". TIGER is a member of the consortium which realizes the
project.
January 2010 Professor Kolodko's book
"Wedrujacy swiat" ("Wandering World") drives continuously great
interest both in Poland and worldwide. It's confirmed again by the
numerous visit at the special website portal, the NAVIGATOR - www.wedrujacyswiat.pl.
In 2009 there had been as many as 27.381 visits from 73 countries. It's
worth to mention that in the last two months over 50 tables, charts and
maps have been updated. This dynamic statistical appendix, which -
together with the blog www.wedrujacyswiat.pl/blog/ - is
the core of NAVIGATOR, now presents the most
recent information.

Two next issues of TIGER Working Papers have been published. Papers by prof. D. Mario Nuti, who is member
of TIGER Scientific Advisory Board, titled "The Former Soviet Union after
Dis-integration and Transition" and "Exit Strategies" are important
contribution to the discussion on the evaluation of the Post-socialist
transition and on contemporary financial crisis. We highly recommend
these interesting papers.

The January issue of Croatian monthly "Banka"
publishes (p. 25-27) interview with Professor Grzegorz W. Kolodko.
The dialogue, at which for the same questions answers Professor Tomasz
Mickiewicz from University of London, is called "Zid(ni)ke Pao" ("The
Wall (did not) fell").

January 2010 The
TIGER Director, Professor Grzegorz W. Kolodko has
become the member of Scientific Council of the Foundation
for European Progressive Studies, FEPS. Mr. Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, the Danish
politician, serves as the President of FEPS and Mr. Henri
Nallet, the French diplomat and scholar chairs the Scientific
Council. Professor
Kolodko
has been invited to join the FEPS Council as "well-known politician,
who re-set the Polish economy twice as Poland's Deputy Prime Minister,
a highly appreciated economist and professor and author of several
significant publications". FEPS, which was created by the European
Council and European Parliament in December 2007, embodies a new way of
thinking on the progressive scene in Europe. The Foundation establishes
an intellectual crossroad between social democracy and the European
project, putting fresh thinking at the core of its action. As a
platform for ideas, FEPS works in close collaboration with progressive
organizations to tackle the challenges that Europe does face.

January 8-26, 2010
And the exposition of Professor Grzegorz W. Kolodko's
photographs "The world as it is..." wanders and wanders. During last
two years it has visited already 15 cities. Now there is a time to show
it at auditorium of the Lesznowola County Culture Centre
in Lazy, near Magdalenka, at the Warsaw's outskirts. The opening, with
the participation of the author, takes place at 8, Przyszlosci Street,
